Class Composition

Next year’s classes, balanced with what your teachers know

Class Composition helps your school form next year’s classes: teachers fill in a placement survey for the students they teach, you say who must be kept apart and who should stay together, and a balanced first draft is made for you to adjust. When the lists are right, they become your new class groups.

What it does

A placement survey for teachers

Teachers open one link, pick their group, and give each student an academic band and a behaviour band, with notes and the classmates to keep apart or together. You see how many students have answers so far.

Constraints that hold

Bring the survey’s answers in as constraints, add your own, or carry them over from an earlier round. Any class that breaks one shows it in red.

A balanced first draft

Auto-balance spreads students across the number of classes you set, within your class sizes, weighing gender and the survey’s bands. Drag students between classes, ask where one student fits best, and export the lists.

How it works

  1. Set up your school

Sign up, then add your teachers and your students on the People page, or send them a join link.

  2. Start a round

Pick the groups this year’s students are in, set how many classes you want and how big, and send teachers the placement survey.

  3. Balance and commit

Bring in the survey’s answers, auto-balance, move students by hand where you need to, and commit the lists as class groups.

What it costs

Class Composition is free on its own, with no card, for up to 30 people. Each app you add after it is $25 (NZD) a month, and each person beyond those 30 people is $2 (NZD) a month.

Questions people ask

Who sees the placement survey?

Your staff run the rounds. Each teacher fills in the survey only for the groups they teach, and students and families never see it.

Do we need our timetable or our classes?

No timetable and no courses. A round takes its students from the groups you pick, so first put this year’s students into groups on the People & groups page; a group there needs no course. Linking the new classes to a course, and counting the students on your support registers, come with the whole of MyTime.

What happens when we commit?

Each draft list becomes a class group with its students in it. Nothing changes before you commit, and a commit cannot be undone from the round, so check the balance summary first.

Can we add more later?

Yes. Add another app, such as a timetable built from your courses, classes and rooms, or the whole of MyTime, and keep everything you already have.
